Finding Them

Get your first 100 users from a subreddit before AI search summarizes it

A founder's checklist for turning a subreddit thread into early users before AI summaries bury the original.

You have a product, a niche, and a list of subreddits that feel closed off. Your first users will not come from a launch post. They come from a thread that answers a question your ideal customer already asked.

Manual outreach and hand-holding are the only growth tactics that work before scale. The first-100 community reach checklist is:

  • Find the exact question your ideal customer profile (ICP) asks in the target sub.
  • Answer it in a community your ICP follows.
  • Verify real-member reach.
  • Make the thread clear enough for AI search to cite.

The exact question is the entry point

Search for the problem, not the product. Look for threads where someone describes the pain, lists tools they tried, or asks for a recommendation. Done looks like you can point to a question, an asker, and a gap your product fills. Save the thread URL and note the date, so you can return when the asker replies.

Do not start with your category. Start with the symptom. If your product helps people track client invoices, search for the frustration behind late payments, not for a list of invoicing apps. The thread should make the need obvious before your name appears.

The answer must live where the ICP already is

Post where the buyer already asks for help, not where you can announce a startup product. The post should read as a direct response to the question, not a pitch. Give the useful answer first, then mention your product only if it is the natural next step. Done looks like a stranger can read your post and recognize the answer they were looking for.

The mistake is posting a launch link and calling it community growth. That wastes the only asset you have before scale: trust. If the community asks for recommendations, give a recommendation. If it asks for workflows, give a workflow, then show where your product fits.

Real reach depends on membership, not visibility

Verify real-member reach before you spend hours on the thread. Reddit launched its feed-splitting test on September 2, 2026, initially reaching a limited group of users worldwide across every platform. In that experiment, the Following feed shows only conversations from communities a user has joined or users the user follows.

That makes membership and follows the gate. If your ICP is not in the sub, your answer may not reach them even if it ranks in the sub.

Check the sub's active members, not just its size. Look for recent questions from people who match your buyer and replies from people who ask follow-up questions. You are done when you can name the kind of person who would click your product, and you can see them asking the question you are answering.

The thread should be the answer AI search will cite

Reddit's Ask search tab will provide AI-generated summarized answers about what Reddit users say in response to a query. Reddit will start its Ask tab test in mid-September, initially reaching a limited group of users worldwide across every platform. Your thread should be easy to summarize: a question, an answer, an example, a link.

Write the answer in plain language. Put the key point at the top. Use short paragraphs. Name the problem, the solution, and the result. The thread is ready when a summarizer can pull the opening lines and still give a useful answer.

In AI search citations, Q&A threads made up more than half of Reddit citations, and Q&A, comparison, and discussion formats together made up nearly three-quarters of cited content. Reddit's share of Google's top three search positions rose to 10.24% after the May 2026 core update, from 8.56% after March and 9.19% after December. Reddit was the top cited domain on Perplexity with a 4% share, second on SearchGPT with a 13% share, and third on Google AI Mode with a 9% share. A clear community answer can outlive the thread.

Post the answer, reply to questions, and keep the thread useful. Add a short note when you update the answer.
